Sorry if this has been handled before but it a little slow around here anyway. My rear shift linkage bracket is no longer rotating the shaft. The tightening allen bolt was tight. The bracket & shaft splines mnust be worn. Apparentlt the bracket can not be removed fron the shaft? The shaft and primary? have to be taken out? I have the manual, but don't know how extensive a job it is. Had to abandon the bike at work. Any tips on a way to get home or should I just trailer up? Is this a job a person of average mechanical ability can do without sewriously f*ckin something up? Thanksfor any input.

I had my 2003 flhtc in for a new engine and I commented to my service rep that I had way too much play with that shaft and could not tighten the bolt anymore. Thank goodness I had the extended warranty. He gave me the impression that they did the repair with the transmission in place. The shafts are too soft and they tear out the splines. Harley does know about it as the service rep knew what the problem was as soon as I mentioned it. Mine was not as bad as you describe, mine was still at the rattling stage.

The inner primary has to come off which means you will need some special tools to remove the compensator sprocket, primary chain, and clutch hub. Other than that it's not too difficult of a job. You may want to look at your final drive belt while you have it apart depending on the mileage.

Here is a possible assist for your temporary repair. Go to the local Sears store and in the tool dept.....get a small bottle of Craftsman "Grip Doctor". It's made to help "grip" nuts and screws. For example, you put a couple of drops of it on the head of a phillips screw and then it helps to keep the screwdriver from rounding out the screw head.
I think it has some kind of grit in the solution which would or could help to assist the grip of the shift lever on that splined shaft....

This linkage has always been real loose. I've checked the bolt with my folding allen wrench set many times and it was tight, i thought. This time i used a single allen wrench that fit right down in there and tightened the bejeesus out of it with a cheater bar. I think now it is tight like it should have been all along. Hopefully the splines aren't worn too badly. I can get it home now and inspect it better.

I had the splines wear out on the front part of my shifter on my 03 roadking, I replaced it about a year and a half ago. That was not too expensive and very easy to change.

Can't you put a pair of vise-grips on it and kick them enough to get home??? Just my two-cents.

Put the vise grips where? And kick what? Just joking, thought about borrowing EODHOGS custom shifter. After I tightened it back up went about 50 miles on my lunch hour and it was still tight when I got back.

OK so tightening the bejeesus out of it didn't work. Worked for quite a while, I ride this bike every day and it stayed tight. So Friday morning I left for Stugis, everything ok. Partied all night, next morning gonna go for a ride and it's slipping again. So I buy my t-shirts and head back home. I get to the off-ramp at Billings and I'm stuck in 5th. Dicked with it for about an hour and gave up. Called Bear Tooth Harley, they picked me up had me in the shop and out in less than 3 hours and I was home by 9:00. Made for some fairly expensive t-shirts but I don't have to worry now about the next ride.

Ok I`m back again. 3500 miles since I paid $330 to have this fixed and now it`s back again. What am I doing wrong? This should not be happening. I`ve tightned it to the ppoint I`m afraid I`ll twist the head off the bolt. I`ve loosened it moved the lever to a different spot on the shaft and it still happens.I`m gonna contact the dealer that worked on it and maybe they`ll stand behind it but I won`t be riding there untill Spring. So here it is 71 in November and I`m driving not riding. F*ck it.
